THE GOLDEN GAUNTLET
Directed, designed & animated for Golden Guardians with illustration work provided by Wade Malone
Spiritual successor to The Octagon 1 & 2, The Golden Gauntlet was a live invitational event hosted by Golden Guardians on February 4th & 5th 2023.
Designed to mimic classic underground fight clubs, the theme & style embraced the endurance & survivability of competitive Melee while also elevating the event to an extravagant level beyond the expectations of the average Melee tournament.
TGG COMMUNITY TOURNAMENT
The Golden Gauntlet Community Bracket was an online-only event open to the public the night prior to the main event. These graphics feature a less customized yet more flexible format for stream runners to edit on the fly.
These graphics are filled using sample data as the VODs are not currently available since the livestream aired.
THE GOLDEN GAUNTLET INVITATIONAL
The flagship event featured 12 of the best SSBM players in “grudge matches” determined by factors such as player reputation, recent match history, or world ranking.
The stream was broadcast live on Twitch, and clips of each match can be found on the GG Melee Youtube Channel.
TGG TRAILER
The trailer for the event featured custom-designed action figures of all 12 invitees. Each figure started as a blank mannequin and were sculpted and painted to their likeness (to the best of my abilities). All clothing was hand-sewn to represent their personal style and affiliated team colors.
Do I have a version of this video without the retro filter? Unfortunately not. Did I take photos of the dolls? Unfortunately not. The figures were gifted to the players at the end of the event. Tight timelines and tunnel vision aside, these were a very fun aspect of this project to tackle beyond the usual scope of design.
